President's Note

From the January 2012 Newsletter:

HAPPY NEW YEAR

We had an exciting 2011 year.  Colleen, thank you for taking charge of the association in 2011 and doing a great job.  We had a very festive Cinco de Mayo community celebration at Wayside Park with a 9-piece Mariachi to entertain us.  May also started our participation in the First Wednesday season with many community people exposed to our sister city organization.  This followed another successful Youth Exchange summer headed by Rita Galvin.  This year we hosted 6 Tulancingo students and sent 5 young ambassadors to Tulancingo for a month.  A big “thank you” to Mary Mendez for chairing yet another successful BBQ fundraiser in August.  This only fundraiser of the year allows us to continue into our 29th year as a sister city.

September was a challenge with hosting a 31-member delegation visit from Tulancingo.  But no problem, visit Chairperson Annie Brozosky, with support from Steve, Lila & Mike Terkelsen and her committee were up to the challenge.  They came up with a fun, diverse and cultural visit program that our friends really enjoyed.

We participated in the annual Hometown Holiday Parade which this year had 95 entries (us being the 94th entry out of the Amador High School parking lot).  We thank the Amador Spanish Club, under the direction of Señora Karen Eyewe and President Andy Billings for their help with the float decorations and also for helping out at the Cinco de Mayo event.  The float included a six-foot high pyramid mounted on the trailer and pulled by the car made available by David & Dolores Sanchez.

Finally we ended the year co-sponsoring a Posada with the Pleasanton Library, and coordinated by parents & teachers from Valley View School.  The Posada took place at the library with an attendance of approx. 300 people…lots of fun.  Sorry I only mentioned a few people, but it really took the many of you who helped make these events a success, THANKS TO ALL!

Unfortunately, we did have the disappointment of not having a delegation for the April visit to Tulancingo.  This didn’t quite stop us from getting together with our Tulancingo friends.   By using today’s “Skype” technology, Approx. 40 of us got together at Alice & Kent Pryor’s home and about the same number assembled in Tulancingo.  Taking turns in small groups, we were able to see and speak to each other through an “internet visit.”  Our friends in Tulancingo really missed seeing us, and this year we are making an extra effort to have a good delegation for our April visit.  Please see the visit information AND consider joining the April Delegation to Tulancingo.

Wishing you the best in year 2012!
